Name that baby

One of my most favorite things to talk about is baby names.  I could spend hours talking about baby names.  It's probably obnoxious, but I'm always pestering pregnant women about what names they are thinking about....and I am not shy about chatting with a mom at the store about her baby's name.  I just love hearing what parents have decided on, how they chose the name, if there is a fun story behind it....I think that what we name our children can say a lot about us.  I have a friend whose daughters are Sonora and Liberty (Libby).  Aren't those gorgeous?  I also have a friend who is pregnant and is going to name her son "Gunnar".  We love it!  You can already tell he's just going to be a cool kid!!

You can see the top names for 2009 here.  I was looking through this tonight.  I am not into overly unique names for my own children.  And we've avoided really popular names....although Emma was my favorite name when I was in middle school, and we briefly considered "Addison" instead of Allison.  I don't mind if my children's names are on the top 100 list...because they are...just not at the very top!  Cameron & Allison.  Classic names, I think!  I know a few other Camerons and Allisons...but I hope they don't have to go through their school years as "Cameron W." and "Allison W."  That was my goal when naming them....for them not to have a ton of classmates with the same name....that, and for them to not be mad at us for naming them something crazy!  Guess you never know though!

We have a few names on our list for when #3 and #4 make their arrivals.  I love them all.  I think they are classic and normal and not too trendy, like their older siblings.  The other day I tried to ask Cameron what he wanted to name a potential baby brother or sister (not an announcement!).  If it's a boy..."Hundley" (from Curious George).  If it's a girl...."Another Allie."  That's about all I can ever get out of him on that subject!!

So...if you're a mother, then you've named a baby.  Why did you choose the name(s) you did?  Was it hard to agree on?  If you don't have children yet, what names are you thinking of?  I love hearing interesting stories.... The newest member of Nate's family, for example...little miss Kaiah.  Her name is a mix between her mom's name, Kasie, and her dad's name, Jeremiah.  So creative!  They lucked out....not sure there's a good combo of Nathan & Rebecca....RaNathacca???  Good thing we aren't celebrities.

And have I ever mentioned that I first fell in love with the name "Allie" as a child when I watched "Karate Kid"...haha!  Remember Daniel's girlfriend he meets at the beach?  Her name is Allie.  I thought she was so pretty.  I grew up knowing I was going to name a little girl that.  Not the greatest baby name story, but it's the truth!!

Happy Mother's Day to one of the best moms I know! I'm so thrilled to be in touch with you.

Our names:

Our oldest, Blake Carter is named after Steven Blake, my husband. They both go by their middle name. A tradition in the Starnes family.

Jack Clemens was named after my father.....Clemens is my maiden name.

Lainey Caroline.....my sister is Caroline (my closest friend and inspiration in life) and Lainey just came to us. I, too, wanted something unique, but not too out there.

So, 4/6 of our names are family.......except for Carter and Lainey......and those we just adore!

Great post. Have a great day!

Ethan I had loved the name forever...but sadly also was super popular by the time I had him. Karington I heard on a show and just changed the spelling. Number three will be Clara...we just both loved the name and it wasn't on the top 100. Poor Ethan is the only one who is!

When I was pregnant with Aiden we were certain it was a girl (the Emma that Brandon and I are so certain is meant to come to our family) and so we were looking at boy name jsut in case but only half heartedly. One day I was putting laundry away or something in our room and the spirit whispered the name Aiden. I asked Brandon about it and he said he didn't like it (I later found out that he said that because he thought it was a mute point to be thinking about boy names). Well, shortly after that we found out that we were having a boy and when someone asked if we had a name picked out I said, well I like Aiden but Brandon doesn't and he said yes I do. We put the first name in a middle name picker website for his middle name Riley which means valiant. Anyway the name Aiden was fitting because it means, "Little Fire" and Brandon's name means from the beacon hill. We really liked how well they correlate.

Lucas was harder. We literally went through every boy name on a baby website making a list of favorites and changing the list around. When we had finally narrowed it down we each picked our favorites and got some input from family. Lucas was the only name that we both liked. It means light or illumination and so it correlates well with the other two. The middle name was Brandon's top pick for a name Alexander and it means "defender or the people" which we really liked. It is a big name for such a little guy but I have no doubt that he will grow into it.

So there you go, I have no idea what we will do for names if we have more boys, it will be a lengthy process but I don't stop until I have confirmation from the spirit that I have chosen well.

Nate suggested 'Cameron' when we were dating...I remember we were sitting in an Italian resturant. Random. But that was it...we never even discussed any other boy names. If we have another boy though...not sure what he'll be named!

How about "Baccan" (like bacon).

Will got his name from all four of his great-grandpas. His full name is WIlliam Ray. Andy and I both have a grandpa named William, though they both go by Bill (which I am not a fan of at all!) His middle name is Ray, which is my other grandpas middle name (and also always the first born sons middle name) Andy's other grandpa is named Raymond, but he went by Ray. It was a no brainer. He has been William Ray since before we knew he was a boy.

Andy and I could NOT agree on a girls name. By the time we had the ultrasound, it was between Abigail and Emilia. Abby for short or Emmy. I am no longer a fan of Abigail, it's too common, but I love Emelia. We also really like the name Claire.

If our next kid is a boy, we really like Wyatt Andrew. For Andy and Wyatt Earp. hahaha

BJ chose Trevan's name. He got it off of none other than 'Sports Center'. After playing around with the spelling for a couple of weeks, I was sold on the name too. I have always loved the name Jakob (or Jacob, either one). I had a cabbage patch doll with that name when I was young. BJ picked the spelling, Jakob. Hyrum comes from Hyrum Smith, which is the boys'
5th great grandfather. Pretty neat!
