Happy New Year!

Every so often, we come across people in our lives who we just click with.  Friendship is automatic, and it only gets better.  I'm convinced that there are certain people who we were close with before we came to Earth, and when we finally meet back up here, we connect again and literally become friends for forever.  Maybe I'm wrong.  I don't know.

Well either way, a few years ago, I was chatting on the webcam with my friend Kathy, who I met a long time ago.  Her friend Lesley was there too, so I "met" Lesley.  Neither of us can really explain why or how, but we just completely clicked.  We have been dear friends ever since.

I can talk to Lesley about anything.  And I do mean ANYTHING!  We have helped each other through things and lifted each other up and laughed together and cried together.  Some of our conversations have been so emotional and intense that I will never forget them.  I love her so so much.  She is family to me, maybe even closer than family.

She lives in Eastern Canada, so I never thought we'd get to meet up in person.  But guess who came to Utah for New Years?!?!?

On Saturday morning, she showed up at my door, and we gave each other the biggest hug ever.  It was automatically as if we'd been best friends for our whole lives.  Claire gave her lots of snuggles, and Cam obviously showed her all of his superhero gear.  She hung out with the kids for a little bit, then we took Roo with us and went out for breakfast.  I met her husband Darren, who I was SO SO impressed with.  Lesley and I both aren't sure how we snagged such great men!  We only got to visit for a little bit, so I invited them to come down to my parents house for New Years Eve.  An hour was NOT enough time with her!

So....they were supposed to get down to Salem around 8 or so, but turned out the SF exit was blocked off, so they had to exit at Benjamin and they got lost.  They stopped to call, but of course that didn't work out, so then her daughter Chelsea spotted an LDS Church.  They went inside and found a HUGE Tongan party going on!!  Hilarious.  I honestly didn't believe them when they told us!  So these Canadians show up at the Tongan party and are trying to get directions to Salem.  So get this:  The woman they ask for help ends up being a patient of my dad's!!  He delivered her twins!!  Even more random/hilarious!  So she helps get them to our place, but sadly it was pretty late, so once again our visiting time wasn't nearly as long as I was hoping for.  But it was still fun.  They got to do the end of the Yarn Ball with us (Chelsea scored some cute gloves for those freezing winters in Rexburg) and the Fraser family got to try a Babe Ruth candy bar for the first time....HELLO, yum!!  And my sister had made her New Orleans rice and beans for dinner.  Lesley loved that.  It was so fun to hang out with them again.  I promised Lesley I'll help Chelsea with anything she needs up at college, just wish I were closer to her.  But 3 hours away is a lot closer than Lesley will be to her!  By the way, I LOVED Chelsea too!  Gorgeous and smart and had me laughing so hard!!  I hated saying goodbye to them.  I'm hoping we'll get to see each other again someday....  Love you my dear, dear friend!!!

(I look gross ("your chin, becca, keep it up!!"), but we were soooo tired trying to stay up until midnight, I'm getting too old for that!! And the poor Frasers were just exhausted from driving all over the state of Utah!!!)

SO....what is a Yarn Ball, you might ask?

The Yarn Ball is a really great tradition that my mom does for us every New Years.  She buys a gazillion little presents and wraps them one by one onto yarn.  She rolls the yarn up as she goes along, forming a huge ball.  So then we all sit around and take turns unravelling the yarn.  When a present falls onto our lap, then we pass the ball along to the next person.  It takes a few hours to get through, and it's so fun to trade gifts and see what we get.

Sam gets a turn!  We love Cousin Sam.  He and Nate have so much fun together.

Waiting for their turn.....

Pwetty Cwaire is 5 months old!!!

Happy New Year!

2011 was a little stressful, but welcoming Claire made up for that!  Hoping 2012 brings us the results we want...but if not, we have faith that the Lord will take care of our family, just like He always, always does.

(Post coming tomorrow about my goals for 2012.)

Let the party begin... said...

Oh, Becca I'm sitting in a crowded airport in Montreal reading this to Darren...talk about tearing-up, lol! How awesome was that whole evening, lol! Will be memorable for a long time! Chelsea said it was all worth it to meet you! Your dad made a great impression on the two of them and I enjoyed being welcomed in your home. I look forward to our next visit...fingers cross, it will be this summer. Love you dear friend and I'm so glad for all those conversations. There were days when I needed a friend and you managed to be there. I see no double chin and you look fantastic! Tell Nate Chelsea hasn't had a chance to do her puzzle as she is trying to straighten out her first few days. Love you and Skype with you soon!

What a COOL story! I LOVE it!!!! I also love your yarn ball tradition!!!!! Does she wrap it all in the middle, and then they slip out, or does she wrap things at different points in the ball? (do you understand my question? I can't figure out how to ask - I'm just trying to figure out how she wraps it so I can copy the cool idea!) :)

Sarah, I've never watched her do it, but she wraps them as she goes along, so the presents fall out one by one. When you get your present, that's when you pass it to the next person. You just keep unrolling it. It's usually dollar-store stuff, candy, little toys, this year there was a $5 bill and measuring spoons and gloves and pens. You never know what you'll get, haha!!
